Students.

Q1 I would be in the first Year 12 group in September 2010. How will I know if the teachers are any good (and the exam results) if no-one's been before?
A1 Good question. For starters, we'll make sure we select the right people. That means skills, experience, flexibility; and the type of teacher who totally believes in our Aims and shares the values of Suffolk One - achievement, enjoyment, partnership and inspiration! You may very well find some familiar faces from your own school. This is a massive new venture with the drive, dedication and requirement to succeed from day one. And the best bit is - you'll be part of the success story.

Q2 The centre looks huge and I know I'll get lost. Will there be maps?
A2 Most of us won't have worked or studied anywhere so big before so you won't be alone in feeling a bit daunted. But there's nothing for you to worry about. The architects and designers are making sure all the signs and directions are easy to follow; and there'll be digital screens with news and updates. And yes, we'll probably print maps too - just to be on the safe side!

Q3 My current school is much smaller, so you know all the teachers and all your friends. You know who to talk to about stuff. How can you get the same kind of thing with 2000 students everywhere?
A3 Part of the deal in getting Suffolk One built was to ensure there is a ‘transition' structure in place to help students make that change - and as you point out, this is a really valuable thing to have anyway. It means there'll always be someone to talk to, whether it's about your study, or personal stuff, or anything. One is all about you, your progression, your experience. So don't worry, you won't be left to fend for yourself.

Q4 What time will lessons be?
A4 Lessons start at 9.30am and finish at 3.45pm. The day will be broken into 2 two and half hour sessions with one hour 15 minutes for lunch to allow for students to engage in tutorial and in a wealth of clubs and special events. Each lesson will consist of a whole range of different learning activities to stretch you and develop the skills of flexible working you will need to pass your exams and to thrive in the 21st century workplace.

Q5 Will I be able to use Suffolk One’s resources outside of lesson time?
A5 Yes. Suffolk One will be open to students from 8am until 5pm. You will have access to specialist rooms, such as in Technology and Photography, at the lunchtime and the end of the day. Sports facilities and much else will be available at lunchtime. If you form a music band, there will be somewhere to practice.

Q6 What will be the relationship between students and staff?
A6 It will be based on courtesy and mutual respect. Just as staff will call you by your first name, you will do likewise with them. At Suffolk One we will all work hard to create positive relationships that allow everyone to feel valued and to have the very best chance of success.
